todays the day!

final hand in today!
and my prints will be arriving from print space today! SCARY!

to sum up this project, here are my overall thoughts and my conclusion....

For my Final self-directed project I decided to produce portraits of people with red/ginger hair.  I was influenced by my previous body of work that I produced, in which I looked at the topic of twins.
I am interested in showing genres of people and looking into how people can be put into stereotypes, such as the stereotypes people associate with being a twin or having a specific hair color.

My photographs were taken in various locations between Bristol and Sevenoaks, the majority of my shoots were taken on location with a select few shots utilizing the studio space.
Often at the start of a project I find that I am overwhelmed with thoughts and ideas, as a result of this enthusiasm I find that I can, on occasion, not put enough thought into my process and the technical aspect of my work at the beginning. Looking back at my work I find that my first shoots are rarely successful, this is frequently due to lighting/colour problems. This issue is prevalent in my most recent project with the use of indoor lighting.
If more time and thought was allowed at the beginning of the projects, with respect to deciphering what I want the images to depict and represent, then time wouldn’t be wasted, particularly with regard to the models, who agree to be photographed and lend their time.

I felt at one stage in my project that there was no clear connection between shoots and as a result the project felt very disconnected. This was due to small changes being made throughout this body of work; the most predominant, perhaps, being the change of style of which I photographed my subject. Originally I had hoped to focus on fashion photography, however as the project progressed I felt that the imagery I was producing would not fit into this genre, the focus therefore shifted to portraiture.
Towards the end of my project I decided to also shoot in black and white, and, on the final shoots, also use a green filter. This decision gave my project a purpose and a reason and the use of large format strengthened this.

I feel that the overall outcome of this project is strong, but that the project as a whole could have been improved through more technical consideration with each shoot.

During this project I tried to improve my time management by creating plans, however I found that I would rarely stick to a specific plan. If more time was allowed to manage and plan each photograph, and the project as a whole, I believe that I would of created a stronger, more rounded body of work, and a better standard of photography throughout the duration of this project, as opposed to only having strong images towards the end of the shoots.

The research that I have gathered has been mainly from websites, along with visiting a lot of exhibitions and reading various photography magazines. I feel that I could have done more research without the use of the internet by reading through more books; however I had difficulty picking out the relevant sections and parts to read. This is something that I need to work and improve on, had I managed my time more effectively perhaps I could have put time aside for reading more, which would result in my project being contextualized more thoroughly than I feel it is.

The skills I have achieved within this body of work mainly lie in the knowledge and skills gained in using large format and the confidence I have gained in this medium.
As always I began this project digitally, and then moved onto medium format. After discussion I was then persuaded to experiment using large format in a shoot. I found this process thrilling and really exciting to use, this process also improved my photography skill base as well as improving my eye and knowledge of taking a portrait. The thought process and time taken to capture each image was something I found refreshing and extremely beneficial for me. My frequent use of digital can often result in the images being captured mindlessly, with less thought going in to what I was shooting. This is very evident through this body of work.
Large format photography was so enjoyable to me as it gave me more control on the final geometry of each image I took, along with the perspective and the areas of sharpness within the photograph. So much time is taken on a single exposure, and so much effort is invested in it that you're compelled to think each shot through carefully in order to produce a good image. This stepping back allowed me to finally produce two very strong portraits.

My knowledge and skill base for developing my own negatives has also strengthened; this choice of medium has allowed me to scale up my images to a size which I never expected to see my prints in (A0).
My Photoshop skills have greatly improved mainly due to the editing of my final images. I have learnt about the difference of a subtlety and the difference the smallest change can make to an image.

Creating a website and specifically a blog has allowed me and forced me to be more reflective and analytical of my work, and although I would say this is something I still need to improve on, it is also fair to say that this is something I am learning to become better at through time and has significantly improved from previous years.

My final outcome is completely different to what I had originally thought it would be. Firstly because I never envisaged producing black and white images and secondly the scale of the images (I never thought I would produce such massive prints). The final outcome changed when the images I had produced weren’t strong enough, lacking in depth of meaning.
I feel that I have finally found myself and my style within this body of work. If I had more time I could have improved even more and gone on to produce a strong coherent body of photographs.  The process of large format has given my final images a finer meaning and context.

If I were to complete this self directed project again, I would of managed my time more effectively and looked further into the planning and technical side of the project. One thing that is significantly lacking in my body of work is group critique, although I received feedback from various tutors, I seemed to miss receiving group critique of my work which is something I think is vital and helps in contextualizing the work more efficiently.
In conclusion I personally feel that my project was a success in the end. ‘In the end’ being the most significant part. The process part of this project is what brought my work together and without it, I would of concluded with a very empty body of work.
Although my time management and process should have been slowed down and could have been improved upon much earlier I am ultimately happy with my final two images and final shoots. I feel that my final images are very strong and are the starting point for future portraits I would like to produce. The knowledge gained through using large format is unforgettable and is a process that I intend to use in the future and from now on.

I am now at the point in my photography where I should be showing my work and getting my work ‘out there’. As discussed earlier, I feel that during this project, particularly nearer the end, I was producing strong work, some of the strongest portraits I have produced from the past 3 years.
As a result I finally felt like I was at a point where I could start to think about my portfolio.  After looking through all of my various shoots I started to think about which images I felt where the strongest, this resulted in a mix of both color and black and white images.
I felt that it would be a shame to not have a printed portfolio however after consideration, the cost of this would have been too significant, on top of the cost of printing my final images, which is where I felt my money was better spent at this stage.
Because of this I also began to consider how the cost of a printed portfolio would mean that I would want my photography/ images to be worthy of the money spent. As I am only now at a point where I feel I have found my niche and process, I believe that my imagery will continue to grow and become stronger from here. As a result I feel that I need to allow myself more time to create a strong, coherent body of work before I consider a printed portfolio.

As a result I have chosen to use my website as my portfolio. This allows me to continuously alter what I am doing and allows me to get feedback on my work freely, which at this early stage in my career is a very important thing. The use of my website has allowed me to try out various styles of representation and therefore allowed me to be creative and make decision about how I want my ‘brand’ of photography to be seen. This, in turn, shows the viewer more about me than a printed portfolio would. Undoubtedly a printed portfolio is something I will definitely look to produce and I feel is vital, as seeing a photograph as a print and digitally is completely different, with the print being clearly superior to digital imagery.  However, this is something that will take time and I will only consider doing once my work is strong enough and once it has received sufficient feedback and critique.

final images....

after doing test  strips at A0- the quality was holding well. focus was good,

Therefore went to Print space in London and got the images printed. I was going to order the prints online however decided that it would be better to go to print space (after discussions with frank) as the colour system is slightly different and considering the cost of each print. it was worth me going up and doing a test strip there.
the images are A0 size with a 3.5inch white border
COST - in total my prints cost me £77.20 each

FRAMING - decided that i did not want the images framed as the paper type i chose -"hahnenmuhle" emphasised the images. particularly showing the skin off well and adding to the film quality that the images embody.

PINS - Suzanne had some pins from muji which i had a look at and decided would be perfect for pinning up my images. However when i went to london an visited there shop in covent garden - i was told that they had discontinued the pins!
therefore Suzanne was going to check to see if she had any more at home....

i emailed Jim and requested that for the bower show, my images were NOT in the corridor - due to the frugalness of the photos.. he said that was fine and that we would 'squirrel them away somewhere!"

my website -

GALLERY 1 - this was taken off my website as Nick rightly told me that the gallery of images i had here were disconnected and it was very random.

After talks with Nick, i have also now added these diptychs to my website. Under the title of 'twins' This gallery has replaced the gallery i used to have... 'gallery 1'

To having these two portraits on the home page. I feel that these two images creates a much sharper, more professional opening page to the site. This is due not only to the sharpness of the images but i feel also due to the black and white images.

My website has changed from having the below two images on the front page.....

tutorial with nick

we spoke about

1) FINAL 2 PRINTS:

  • frame? or unframed?
this depends on how big i am going. If i go A0 then a frame probably would work as it would be too big and mostly too expensive!
need to think about what i want:

If my images were framed and behind glass. This would mean the surface would be protected and almost showing how precious the images are.

(if i want them framed talk to niche - would need to get framed images back by latest 6th June)

If the images are exposed and pinned or put on wall using magnets. The paper is exposed and this creates a venerability to the photograph.

PINS! - suzanna is bringing in muju pins for me to look at tomorrow (go see her 1F3 around lunch time!)

WHAT DO I WANT???

need to do test for A0 print

ZANDER - hair in a bit flat and i need to edit!
FANNY - right eye i need to bring out a little

2) WEBSITE:
  • gallery 1 is not as strong as the rest. need to edit or drop this!
make it more coherent!

LOGO and Busines cards

I asked Liam Proniewicz ( www.liampron.com ) - graphic designer to assist with my logo.

Below is the logo which he created and the logo which i have decided to go with.
and this is the rationale he sent me behind this logo:

Rationale:

Firstly, since photography is a clean and clinical profession, it is important that this is evident also in your logo. This is the reason for the thin line and sharp edges in the typeface. Secondly, I have chosen the 'Abraham Lincoln' Typeface as it is slim, and elegant yet still powerful. (All traits of yourself). Since photography is an age old profession, and a portion of your work is done traditionally using film, a serif typeface is important to connote the sense of tradition, since it is associated with class and longevity. The second typeface underneath the line, is 'Arvil'. This is again tall and slim (condensed) in order to appeal to the sharp attention to detail as is key in photography. This one is a sans serif typeface in order to still acknowledge that you are a modern day photographer and are able to turn your hand to both traditional and modern techniques. I have drawn the 'R' to join to the 'H' at the bottom in order to reflect a little of your artistic flair and to simply make the logo unique.

retouching process..

2

Test strips - at A1 size. this was to check the quality of the images and look at the tonal range.

THOUGHTS - tonal range was good. in the first test strip his hair was looking a bit flat ( need to edit/ enhance)
in  test strip 2 - her left eye needed to be brightened a bit...
both images need to be slightly sharpened - only a little bit - talk to George!

the retouching process

from this...
images have been scanned in in jpeg 16bit

to this....

images have been put into black and white and started to address tonal range and contrast and backgrounds.

starting to edit.....

These are the images i have started to edit form the shoot. Some images being stronger than others. overall though, these images have a much better feel as a collection then previous thumbnails from digital shoots.

WHAT NOW? need to talk to Nick and decide on a portfolio selection!

spoke to Jim and Nick

sat with jim and nick and we went through my images from the large format shoot and desided on these two images for my final!
WHY? positioned together the images work well. they both have a quietness about them and similar feel. the freckles are evident and the skin has a certain quality in both images.
theres a shyness shown in both images

this was a really interesting shoot. I think that i found that throughout the shoot i was far more nervous than any of the models! this was greatly to do with the pressure i put on myself and use of large format. i tried to consider the framing of the images and the sharpness.
NEED TO edit these images!

what influenced me....

thinking about large format, i began to think about what was influencing me with my imagery. For me, one of the most influential photographers is Paolo Roversi. who i have looked at many times before...

theres just something about his portraits that draw me in! and by no means am i ANYWHERE near his standard. but you have to reach for something... and for me this is it!

his framing is just right in all of the images as is his tonal ranges and colours. clearly many years of practice have gone into creating and getting to the point where he can crate such intense and interesting portraits.

simply put - he is my inspiration!

Images from large format shoot

I scanned in the images from the large format shoot i did last week. I had 18 negatives that i scanned in.
  • 3 of Fanny
  • 5 of Jayde
  • 4 of Ryan
  • 6 of Zander

Tuesday

WAS MENT TO have a shoot:
was going to photograph 4 people.... however 3 of them do rowing and apparently have a rowing thing tomorrow and it seems a waste to set up for one person. Therefore going to have to cancel shoot tomorrow and concentrate on the images that i do have!

SO, plan for tomorrow....
  • Scan in negatives
  • Photoshop and if i can get some reviews form others
  • think about what my plan from ehre is. What do i want to do with my D600 images?
after developing the images and having them in the wash.. i went to hang them up and i had hung 3.. and they fell! :( 3 of the negative have now been scratched which is so upsetting as i was sooo careful with the developing!!!
Will have to see how it look when i scan them in tomorrow

Important when using large format

  • make sure that the camera is even.... using a spirit level
  • where possible, try and do a test shot. develop first so that you can check the exposure.
  • Focus = obviously is really key, so need to ensure that focus is precise for each shot. Model needs to stay VERY still!
For my shoot
i was using a green filter. This is something i tried and tested before hand. The green filter when used with black and white film, accentuates the freckles on someone. This is what i wanted!

Using green filter
means that it acts as one stop. therefore with the lighting and when doing light metor readings. this has to be taken into considertation. When Frank and i were doing light meter readings, we ensured that we compensated for this.

The film i was using was HP5 400

therefore with light meter readings, i was measuring at an ISO of 200. Which then gave us the meter reading we needed.

I ended up reviewing this all with Angus and he spoke through everything with me and did light meter readings and ended up shooting with:
an aperture of 22 and a quarter with a shutter speed of 60.

Throughout this shoot, i checked that the light was correct, however found that i didn't need to alter anything.
THANKFULLY after developing i was presented with what look like strong images! Just need to scan them in now!

shoot

REALLLY happy with how shoot went today.

Learnt a lot, AGAIN! went through setting up the studio with Frank and getting camera set up. with 55mm lens on front.
Did light tests. ensuring that the background was one stop lighter than the foreground, in order to get a white background.

I was mainly using the large format camera, however took these few on the d600 - just to check lighting ect...

composition is obviously key in photos. Out of the Ryan images i feel this one is strongest. central position with the frame. this image kind of draws back to having a school photo taken.

Friday 3 May 2013

fashion shoot with Martina

These images were used to showcase her jacket in her project and were printed out and handed in with her project.

below are 3 images of the shoot that i feel were 'more' successful...

the softness of this image is where its strength is i feel. i like that her facial identity is hidden, but that part of her identity is shown through her hair color and pale skin.

in both the above and below image.. i think the location adds greatly to the image. tying in the green jacket with the green parallel fencing either side. i think the below image is stronger, because of the composition- but that the colours would need to be edited further.

as a favour to a friend, i photographed her collection of clothing. it was a very last minute thing and it would of been good to of had more time to think more about the shoot. however due to her time management this shoot needed to be done very last minute.
Her clothing line was focused towards people with ginger hair and therefore fit in with the context of my work.
Although i wont be doing anything with these images, i thought i would share them.

Emails from Nick, discussing what my plan is now,

I think that’s why you need to get as many as possible in to shoot – so that you can edit down from all the shots to a series that makes sense visually. Have you tested the green filter yet?
As per a book, I think that it depends on the number/quality of the images. It’s hard to say yes at the moment because there doesn’t seem to be the volume. Let me sleep on it!
N

I guess that my thoughts on the book haven’t really changed – it’s all reliant upon whether you have the number and quality of images. What you have to bear in mind is that even if you go with Blurb, you are looking at a likely turnaround of 10 working days – this means that you would need the images/book layout to be ready to send by the end of this week to have a chance of having a book back by the deadline. Is this realistic?
Keep going with the colour work because it can always form a part of your portfolio at submission but I think that a book is looking a difficult nut to crack given the time that you have left.
N

So, i considered everything that Nick said, And REALISTICALLY a book isn't a viable option.
For me, at the moment, my concentration needs to be on Getting these large format shoots done and out the way and get some great shots so that as nick says. I can edit down from there!
Once i have done these.. i will then consider what my final outcomes/ portfolio are going to look like/ what there gonna be!

FINAL PUSH!
